Welcome to the Town of Brussels web site. The town is located in Door County Wisconsin, just 26 miles northeast of the City of Green Bay. As of the 2020 census, there were 1,135 people in the town.

Brussels, a civil town in Door County, was created on November 12, 1858 and is part of the largest Belgian-American settlements in the United States.

Voting is held at the Brussels Community Center/Town Hall, 1366 Junction Road from 7 AM - 8 PM.  The voter identification requirement will be in effect for these elections.  Next election date(s):

The Town of Brussels recently created a Broadband Review Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the potential development of a high-speed internet solution for all Town of Brussels residences and businesses.  The Broadband Review Ad Hoc Committee is collaborating with other Door County Municipalities and leveraging County and State organizations and capabilities.  To assist with our investigation and help secure potential funding sources for this project, we need information from you to increase the Town of Brussels eligibility for State and Federal Grants.

Once this research was completed, Brightspeed was selected as the ISP to partner with to provide broadband to the town of Brussel residents.  Before the Town of Brussels advances in this partnership, the town board members will be asking the residents to respond to a referendum question on their support for the project.

REFERENDUM QUESTION

Do you support the Town of Brussels borrowing money in an amount not to exceed $370,595 to fund capital improvements for development of a new High-Speed Broadband Internet Fiber Optic Infrastructure throughout the Town in partnership with Connect Holding II, LLC, d/b/a/ Brightspeed?

Summary of question.

A vote of “yes” will express to the Town Board your support to have the Town borrow money for the Broadband Infrastructure Project.                                                A vote of “no” will express to the Town Board that you do not approve of the borrowing of money for the Broadband Infrastructure Project.

1. The following are not accepted at the disposal site:
   • Furniture, Computers, monitors, printers, TVs, Microwaves, Mattresses, Carpeting, padding, flooring, Water Softeners.
2. Absolutely no building materials will be accepted.
   • This includes roofing, siding, sheet rock, windows, doors, countertops, etc.
3. Refrigerators must have the freon removed and the doors taken off.
4. Place items in the proper area.
   • Metal and only metal should be on the appropriate pile. Paint cans should not be placed with metal (only latex based accepted with lid off and paint dried).
5. For burning - only clean wood (not painted or with nails in), branches, grass clippings (out of plastic bags) can be burned.
   • No large branches or trees will be accepted.
6. Recyclables and garbage must be separated.
   • Plastic, metals and paper recyclables may be mixed.
   • Recycling is mandatory.
7.  Any Town of Brussels resident bringing in garbage from other townships from relatives, etc.will be billed and/or refused the use of the disposal site.
8. THE SITE IS OPEN TO TOWN OF BRUSSELS RESIDENTS ONLY AND RECYCLING IS MANDATORY!

Building (inspection) permits are required for any construction (non-agricultural) over 200 sq. ft. and any remodeling, HVAC upgrades, etc.  Contact Brett Guilette, Inspection Specialist, LLC at 920-495-3232.  This is additon to any zoning permits that may be required from JoAnn Neinas, Zoning Administrator.

The town of Brussels was first settled in 1856 by four families from Brabant, Belgium. They were Ferdinand Delveaux and family, Etienne Dandois, his son-in-law, Alexis Franc and Francois Patris. They were part of a large group of emigrants that came from Belgium in 1856-57. Forty-five families settled in what is now the town of Brussels, claiming 3120 acres of land in the western part of the town. Many came to settle in what is the town of Union, and around 15,000 Belgians settled in Brown County and Kewaunee County starting in 1854.  More history of can be found at the Peninsula Belgian American Club web site.

On October 8, 1871, suddenly, in the blackness of the night, a vast torrent of fire descended upon the area. The great fire swept the entire Belgian settlement, being about ten miles wide and sixty miles long. The greatest destruction was in the town of Brussels, where about one hundred people perished. At Williamsonville, a small sawmill village of seventy people, sixty were burned to death in the middle of a three-acre field. The area is now known as the Tornado Memorial Park.

In the 1880's the Belgians, with plentiful harvests, revived the great Belgian festival, the kermiss. The Brussels kermiss is held on the first Sunday of September, and other Belgian communities follow.
